I SVT:s ABC om romska tiggare

Intervjuades i går av SVT efter min, Olle Schmidts och Marit Paulsens debattartikel om de romska tiggarna. 3:16 minuter in i sändningen hittar ni klippet. Frågan om de romska tiggarna måste lösas på EU-nivå. Romerna är inte felet, de  är symtom på att något är fel i många av EU:s medlemsländer. Det är på tiden att vi inför en strategi som är bindande för medlemsländerna. Dessutom måste kommissionen övervaka att de pengar som betalas ut går till romerna och inte hamnar på annat håll.

I SVT:s ABC: Ingå avtal med Uppsala Cancer Clinic nu

I går besökte jag Uppsala Cancer Clinic för att få veta mer om den pågående konflikten med landstinget och det är fullständigt hårresande att möta patienter som har tvingats skriva sig i ett annat län för att få tillgång till vården här. One Billion Rising Flashmob at the European Parliament

Here comes another clip from the flashmob One Billion Rising. You can see me in short sequences here and there =)

On 29 January 2013 in Brussels, the European Parliament rose and danced with Eve Ensler in a One Billion Rising flashmob to call for an end to violence against women and girls.

This initiative was led by European Parliament Vice-President Isabelle Durant (Belgium) with her fellow ”V-MEPs” who performed The Vagina Monologues in the European Parliament in March 2012: Franziska Brantner (Germany), Marielle Gallo (France), Ana Gomes (Portugal), Kartika Liotard (Netherlands), Ulrike Lunacek (Austria), Sirpa Pietikäinen (Finland), Renate Weber (Romania), Cecilia Wikström (Sweden). They were joined by many more MEPs, including Michael Cashman (UK), Leonidas Donskis (Lithuania), Mikael Gustafsson (Sweden, chair of the EP committee on women’s rights and gender equality), Jean Lambert (UK), Barbara Lochbihler (Germany, chair of the subcommittee on Human Rights), Baroness Sarah Ludford (UK, Vice-Chair of the ALDE Group), Marisa Matias (Portugal), Martina Anderson (UK), Judith Merkies (Netherlands), Joanna Senyszyn (Poland, Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights), Gabriele Zimmer (Germany, chair of the GUE/NGL Group), as well as staff at the European Parliament.

TV4Nyheterna Uppsala rapporterar om EU-patentet

Borg godkänd – inslag i Rapport, Aftonbladet etc.

För er som missade mig i Rapport i går kring det beklagliga godkännandet av EU:s nye hälsokommissionär kommer här en länk. Sändningen ligger bara uppe i en vecka, dock.

Ett längre inslag, som förklarar bekgrunden till varför Borg är så kontroversiell, finns att se i Rapports 18-sändning.

Slutreplik i UNT kring abort har fått en del läsare att höra av sig med positiva och negativa kommentarer.

I går intervjuades jag även av en irländsk radiojournalist kring brevet jag och 55 Europaparlamentariker (dock inga från konservativa EPP) uppmanar Irland att omedelbart legalisera abort i landet. Så här skriver vi:

”Dear Taoiseach,

We were shocked to hear of the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar following the decision by consultants at Galway University Hospital in Ireland not to proceed with the termination of an unviable foetus. She developed septicaemia from E Coli after she was refused a timely termination of an unviable miscarrying 17 week-old foetus. She was denied a termination because there remained a foetal heart beat and according to her husband she was told that we ”live in a Catholic country.” We express our deep sympathy to her family and friends.

This tragedy highlights the need for immediate action to introduce legislation for abortion in Ireland. Despite the ruling of the Supreme Court in Ireland in the ‘X case’ that abortion should be permitted in cases where the mother’s life is in danger, successive governments have failed to legislate for this. In the A, B and C v Ireland case, the European Court of Human Rights found that Ireland had violated the European Convention on Human Rights by failing to provide an accessible and effective procedure by which a woman can have established whether she qualifies for a legal abortion under current Irish law.

In order to give support and legal clarity for health care professionals we call on the Irish authority responsible for the health service, the Health Service Executive (HSE), to immediately issue a directive allowing for immediate terminations of unviable foetuses to save women from severe pain and protect their health and life.
Ms. Halappanavar is now the victim of this inaction. We feel that the Irish government should immediately bring forth legislation to permit abortion in cases where the mother’s life or health is endangered as a first step towards the establishment of women’s right to choose in Ireland.

Cecilia Wikström and Sophie in ‘t Veld on the candidacy of Tonio Borg as new EU Commissioner

Se klippet med mig och min holländska liberala kollega Sophie in’t Veld kring nomineringen av Tonio Borg. Vi i den liberala gruppen, ALDE-gruppen, i Europaparlamentet har nu som första parti i Europaparlamentet tagit ställning, vi kommer inte att godkänna Tonio Borg.

After having heavily critizised the nomination of Tonio Borg as EU’s next Health Commissioner MEP Cecilia Wikström has recieved lots of reactions.
